We query the registry over RDAP (the modern WHOIS).

A 404 means the name is unregistered (catchable now); a pending-delete / redemption status means it’s in the drop cycle (catchable soon); otherwise it’s registered.

Is it free?

Yes — availability checks are free and need no signup.

What is “dropping”?

When a registration lapses it enters a delete cycle (auto-renew grace → redemption → pending-delete) before the name is released — that’s when catchers act.

Can you alert me when a name drops?

Drop-catch alerts are on the roadmap. For now, check status here and value the name on the value page.
